About
Hello:
My name is JoAnn and here is a little about me and how I came to love knitting. Our family lived in a rural area, and raised our own sheep and this is where our wool came from. My Dad and Uncles sheared the sheep and my Mum and Grandmother washed it. We carded the wool (combed the wool back and forth between two wooden paddles with steel teeth attached to them) to remove tree bark, little pieces of sticks and other things that sheep seem to collect. Mum then put the wool in bags and sent it off to be dyed. We picked out some of the colors - that way we got the sweaters and woolen socks of our color choice. Since I have moved to the city, and our family no longer has a farm, I buy my yarn now. I do like the variety in color and texture that you can find in the shops these days, but I do sometimes miss the wool we used to get.
I have knit many things, sweaters, socks, scarves, mittens but I like knitting afghans best. I prefer to use circular needles when I knit. I find that I am less likely to lose stitches that way and I like to be able to view the afghan and make sure that what I am knitting is looking like the picture shown in the pattern book. I am currently knitting an afghan for a niece who will be a year old in April. Hopefully, I will get it done in time.
I do have other hobbies: I like baking, crocheting, reading and gardening. I also like to find pattern books and am constantly looking for more to add to the collection I have.
